Tom is a Research Scientist in the AI & Robotics Institute at the EIT, where he works on foundational machine learning and its applications to the natural sciences.
Previously, Tom was a Staff Research Scientist at InstaDeep, where he built and led research teams across a breadth of topics including AI for biology, reinforcement learning, and ML for quantum systems. 听This included developing multimodal protein foundation models and state-of-the-art RL approaches for combinatorial optimisation, taking work from publications at leading venues, through to patents and real-world applications. Tomalso co-founded Lumai, an optical-computing start-up for next-generation ML hardware, where he served as a non-executive director up to its successful Series A in 2024.
Tom holds a DPhil in Atomic & Laser Physics from the University of Oxford and an MSci in Mathematics & Physics from the University of Durham. He has supervised and mentored researchers across machine learning and natural sciences, and enjoys collaborating across academia and industry. Outside of work, Tom likes to stay active, having played hockey for many years and, increasingly, chases after his young family.
